Women's History Month: Innovative Lessons and Activities for All Learners

This blog was written by Megan Felix, Administrative Assistant at New Story Schools in Carlisle, PA

Who’s ready to celebrate Women’s History Month in a cool way? As special education staff, we understand the importance of inclusivity and diversity in the classroom. This year, we have the opportunity not only to honor the incredible achievements of women throughout history, but also to engage our students in innovative lessons and activities that celebrate diversity and empower all learners. Here are three engaging lesson plans designed to inspire our students, including those who are neurodivergent!

Lesson 1: Discovering Unsung Heroes: The New Story Schools Nobel Peace Prize Awards

We invite you to organize a school or classroom-wide celebration that shines a spotlight on the contributions of women within our students' immediate circles, proving that heroism takes place in everyday life! Through this event, the objective is to foster appreciation, gratitude, and awareness for remarkable women within our four walls of life!

To commence, students will nominate a woman in their lives who has left a meaningful imprint, regardless of its magnitude. Whether it be a parent, a neighbor, a family friend, a teacher, or a community member, all are eligible! Faculty will then select winners from each grade based on the depth of impact, sincerity, humor, and open-mindedness displayed in the nominations. The pinnacle of the event will be an award ceremony where students and their families can interact, engage with the nominees, obtain autographs, explore activity stations, and gain firsthand insight into the remarkable deeds of these exceptional individuals.

Lesson 2: Seven Days, Seven Continents: Exploring Women’s Impact Worldwide

In this dynamic lesson plan, students embark on a journey across the seven continents to uncover the impactful contributions of women leaders in all 7 regions of the world who have made a huge impact. This lesson blends history and geography seamlessly.

For visual learners, crafting silhouette portraits of these leaders adorned with captivating fun facts about their lives provides an engaging avenue. Auditory learners can actively participate in group discussions enriched with call-and-response, musical engagement, or captivating storytelling sessions. Kinesthetic learners will thrive in hands-on activities that incorporate sensory-invoking elements, fostering deeper connections to the material or allowing students to dabble in the career, interests, and hobbies of each leader. This comprehensive approach ensures inclusivity and enhances understanding as students dive into the diverse tapestry of women's achievements worldwide.

Lesson 3: Women in STEAM: Inspiring Innovation and Inclusion

Another remarkable lesson involves honoring the groundbreaking achievements of female scientists, artists, engineers, and inventors who have left an indelible mark on the fields of Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, and Mathematics (STEAM). I encourage you to ignite students' curiosity and inspire them to explore the opportunities available in these fields, fostering a sense of innovation and empowerment for all learners.

Throughout the lesson, consider the following approaches:

(1) Engage students in a thought-provoking discussion about the multifaceted roles and contributions of women in various STEAM disciplines. Encourage them to share their insights, questions, and reflections on the importance of gender diversity in these fields. Utilize open-ended prompts to stimulate critical thinking and encourage active participation among students.

(2) Integrate real-life examples and practical applications of STEAM concepts to enhance understanding and relevance for students. Highlight the achievements of female scientists and engineers, such as Dr. Kizzmekia Corbett, the immunologist behind the Moderna Covid Vaccine. Showcase how these innovators have tackled real-world challenges and made meaningful contributions to society through their groundbreaking work.

By celebrating Women in STEAM, we empower students to recognize the trailblazers who are shaping the future landscape of innovation. Together, let us inspire the next generation of problem-solvers, innovators, and leaders!
